Ettrick Elementary

July 30, 2023

Good Sunday evening, Ettrick Family Members!

This is Dr. Smith, your proud principal, calling to share important information as we continue our countdown to the start of the new school year. Three weeks from tomorrow, on Monday, August 21st, at 9:20 AM Ettrick Elementary’s doors will open to students and we will begin the 2023-24 school year.

To help your child arrive on time and return to the right location in the afternoon, please make sure you have identified your child’s means of transportation BEFORE school starts! Several forms are linked in this phone message’s corresponding email that you should review and use to verify your child’s means of transportation. You should begin with the “Preparing for Transportation” form to help you make transportation decisions and identify the appropriate forms to complete by the necessary deadlines.

Once you’ve taken care of your child’s transportation needs, use the time before school starts to review Ettrick’s Student-Parent Handbook. This handbook will help you become familiar with our daily schedule, as well as some of our student expectations that will help all of our students be successful each day.

For our Kindergarten students, we will host our Kindergarten Orientation on the morning of August 17th, from 10:00 AM until 11:30 AM. During Orientation, we will discuss the appropriate Start Days for all of our PreK and Kindergarten students to ensure that each child arrives on the appropriate “First Day” of school. In addition, families and students will have the opportunity to meet the teacher, see the kindergarten classroom, and learn more about how kindergarteners spend their day at Ettrick ES.

After Kindergarten Orientation on August 17th, from 5:00 PM - 7:30 PM, all of our Ettrick families are invited to attend our 4th Annual Back-to-School Block Party and Supply Drop-off event. Food trucks will begin serving food at 5:00 PM, and supply drop-off opportunities will begin at 5:30 PM. We will allow students and family members in for supply drop off during designated time slots, so that everyone has the opportunity to see their classrooms AND enjoy the food, fun, dancing with the DJ, and games outside when supplies aren’t being dropped off. The time slots will be as follows: 4th/5th-grade will drop off supplies between 5:30 and 5:55; 2nd/3rd grade between 6:00 and 6:25, and 1st grade along with any K or PreK student who did not drop off supplies in the morning will enter to drop off between 6:30 and 7:00.

Finally, family members, with only 3 weeks remaining in our summer break NOW is the best time to start preparing to head back to school. This is the perfect time to start setting an appropriate bedtime, as well as a morning wake-up routine. In addition, since we are readers at Ettrick Elementary, begin a simple routine of reading each night for at least 20 minutes. Don’t forget, that Ettrick ES is doing a community read this summer, which means we are all reading the same book, A Boy Called Bat, which Mrs. Kyser sent home at the end of this past school year! So, while you’re building the habit of reading each night, you are also participating in a great school community event!

That’s it for this week’s messages! I hope you all enjoy the rest of your Sunday evening! And remember, while you’re waiting for our new school year to begin…you should be reading!
